Experience the Casentino Forest
A beautiful one hour hike to The Holy Hermitage of Camaldoli, founded in 1012 AD by a Benedictine monk.
A mystical place surrounded by centenary spruce trees in the Tuscan Apennines.
The building complex includes the Medieval Hospice, the church, the Monastery and the old style Pharmacy which used to be a laboratory where the monks worked medicinal plants. Their products are still produced today following the recipes of the time and it’s possible to buy them at the Pharmacy shop.
The Hermitage is located about three kilometres from the Monastery, isolated in the middle of the forest, at 1,100 meters in altitude. It is possible to visit the hospice, which still welcomes guests and pilgrims today, the church, the medieval refectory and Saint Romuald’s cell experiencing the same atmosphere of the past.
